Is the crust of a loaf of bread more dense than the inside of the loaf?

I was wondering this because I think that when eating a sandwich, the most bland part of the sandwich is the crust as opposed to the middle. This lead me to believe that the crust is actually denser than the middle. Does anyone have any answer to this with legitimate sources? I need to prove someone wrong very badly.
